Helaman Luki is a dynamic emerging leader in Māori and Pacific health.

Helaman Luki is a dynamic emerging leader in Māori and Pacific health. He is currently a Doctor at Waikato Hospital having graduated from the University of Otago Medical School in 2023. His academic journey is complemented by his steadfast commitment to integrating Te Ao Māori and Pacific perspectives into medical education and practice.

As the 2023–2024 Tumuaki (President) of Te Oranga, the Māori Medical Students’ Association Aotearoa, Helaman has been instrumental in advocating for the wellbeing of Māori medical students nationwide.

Helaman led initiatives that fostered cultural identity and resilience among tauira, including the organisation of the 2023 Annual Kura Reo wānanga. This event, hosted at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, brought together Māori medical students and professionals which helped deepen proficiency in te reo Māori and explore the integration of tikanga in clinical settings.

Helaman's contributions to health research are notable. He co-authored a significant article on the Marae-based Health Centre management of COVID-19 cases through marae-based health centres in South Auckland, emphasising the importance of community-led responses and the centrality of Te Ao Māori in healthcare policy. This work advocates for primary care providers to lead isolation decisions, ensuring culturally appropriate and community-accountable healthcare delivery

In recognition of his dedication to Māori health advancement, Helaman was honoured with the Iti Rearea Award in 2023, celebrating his leadership and commitment to fostering equitable health outcomes at the University of Otago.

Helaman's multifaceted heritage—Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Hāmoa, and Ngāti Niue—enriches his perspective and informs his approach to healthcare. His leadership continues to inspire and pave the way for future Māori and Pacific health professionals committed to culturally grounded and community-centred care.
