Ben Hingston

Ngāti Whakauae, Ngāti Tūwharetoa

Ben Hingston is an emerging leader in mental health and addiction services, recognized for his innovative and transformative approach to improving equity and outcomes for Māori. With expertise at the intersection of health and politics, Ben leverages creative and strategic solutions to shape service commissioning and drive systemic change.

Ben currently leads the Planning and Performance Group within the Funding and Investment Directorate at Te Whatu Ora. Previously, he served as Executive Director of Service Commissioning – Oranga Hinengaro at Te Aka Whai Ora, the Māori Health Authority. In this role, he championed Māori mental health and addiction service commissioning, embedding Māori rangatiratanga and hauora into the reformed health system.

In 2020, Ben pioneered an innovative eMental health and addiction framework in Rotorua, designed to empower individuals through digital tools that enhance mental well-being. This initiative brought together health and social sector experts to focus on early intervention, kaupapa Māori approaches, and holistic well-being, complementing existing services and addressing rising demand.

Ben holds a Master’s degree with First-Class Honours in Politics and International Relations from Waipapa Taumata Rau, the University of Auckland. His postgraduate research earned him the prestigious Robert Chapman Postgraduate Prize for excellence in New Zealand politics, as well as the Māori and Pacific Graduate Scholarship in 2014 and 2015. His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Social Sciences, majoring in Political Science and Public Policy, from Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato, where he was twice awarded the Māori Excellence Award. He also holds a Tikanga Māori certificate from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.

In January 2025, Ben will expand his impact globally as a Senior Consultant with Kahui Tautoko Limited, supporting First Nations communities in Vancouver, Canada. This next chapter reflects his commitment to empowering Indigenous communities through innovative solutions and collaborative partnerships.

Ben’s dedication to transforming the mental health and addiction landscape and his unwavering focus on Māori well-being position him as a leader shaping a more equitable and inclusive future.
