Dr Vicki Macfarlane is a dedicated GP and addiction medicine specialist who strongly emphasises providing quality medical care with compassion and kindness. Throughout her career in the health sector, she developed a passion for helping individuals struggling with addictions. She has worked hard to educate her colleagues about addiction to reduce stigma and discrimination.

After being a GP for 16 years, she shifted her focus to working in addiction services. In 2011, she joined the Community Alcohol and Drug Services in Auckland and pursued further training in addiction medicine with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. She was appointed as a Fellow of the Australasian Chapter of Addiction Medicine in 2015. Vicki was the Aotearoa New Zealand representative on the AChAM Committee (2016-2022) and is now part of the AChAM Training Committee.

Vicki is the lead clinician of the medically managed withdrawal services at CADS in Auckland. In this capacity, she provides clinical leadership for the new inpatient unit based at the Auckland City Mission, delivering medically supervised withdrawal services for all substances to those in need in the Auckland region.

Vicki has maintained her involvement with the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners as an examiner. She has also continued to do locum work in general practice as she appreciates the variety and challenges it brings. In 2022, the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners awarded her the President's Service Medal for her mahi in supporting and providing addiction services to the community. In 2023, she was awarded the Henry Rongomau Bennett Legacy Award for her leadership within the alcohol and other drugs sector.
